A whitewashed house with a blue door and a bougainvillea doing most of the work, a terracotta pot beside it, and past the wall the Alentejo itself: olive trees, a white monte in the distance, gold going all the way out to a walled town on the hill.

Fado Gato is asleep on the doorstep. He is the only one of the thirteen lying down, and in the Alentejo in the afternoon he is right.
