Preserving Tradition

Rooted in Portugal’s tile-making heritage.

The classic symbols of Portuguese life and heritage

The Signature Collection brings together some of the places, traditions and familiar details that have become part of Portugal's visual and cultural landscape. From the Galo de Barcelos and the andorinha to sardines, pastéis de nata, the Tower of Belém and the traditions of São João, each design begins with something recognisably Portuguese.

Designed by our studio and made to order in Porto, the collection celebrates both the everyday and the iconic: the things we eat, the places we know, the traditions we continue and the images that have come to represent Portugal at home and around the world.

Why they are blue

Blue and white may be the colour combination most closely associated with Portuguese azulejos today, but the story of Portuguese tile begins with considerably more colour.

Azulejos arrived in Portugal through centuries of cultural exchange with the Iberian Peninsula and the Islamic world. King Manuel I's visit to Seville in the early sixteenth century famously inspired the extensive use of decorative tiles at the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, where some of these early examples can still be seen today.

The blue-and-white tradition developed later, during the seventeenth century, influenced in part by the blue-and-white ceramics arriving in Europe from China and by the work of Dutch tilemakers. Portuguese artists and workshops embraced the palette and made it distinctly their own. By the eighteenth century, vast blue-and-white compositions were appearing across churches, palaces, monasteries and public buildings throughout Portugal.

Over time, cobalt blue on white became one of the most recognisable expressions of Portuguese decorative art. It is a tradition we return to often in our own work, alongside the ochres, greens and other colours that also belong to Portugal's long history of azulejo.

Designed in Porto.
Made for your home.

Every tile in the Signature Collection begins as an original design developed by our studio and is produced to order in Porto on glazed ceramic.

Our designs draw from Portuguese places, traditions, architecture and everyday life, interpreted through the visual language of azulejo. They are contemporary pieces inspired by a centuries-old Portuguese art form, created to bring a little of that story into homes today.
