Saudade Collection

Saudade is often described as a Portuguese word that cannot be translated. That is not quite true. Longing, yearning, nostalgia and the ache of missing a person, place or time all come close. What is distinctly Portuguese is how deeply we have learned to give that feeling a language.

The Saudade Collection explores that connection to memory and place through seventeen artist-designed azulejos. Porto's riverfront, quiet cloisters, hydrangeas along an Azorean road, Amália and fado, the sea and the places we carry with us long after we leave them.

Designed by our studio and made to order in Porto on glazed ceramic. Available in three sizes, from €20.

A collection of memory and place

Some places become part of us. A street we once walked every day, the view across a river, flowers growing beside a familiar road, a song that takes us immediately back to another time.

The designs in the Saudade Collection are about those connections. Some celebrate places unmistakably Portuguese. Others explore solitude, departure, homecoming, music and memory. Together, they reflect a feeling that has found an especially enduring place in Portuguese art and culture.

Why saudade is so Portuguese

The Portuguese did not invent longing. But our history has given us a great deal of practice in expressing it.

For centuries, Portugal has been shaped by departures and returns. Sailors left its shores for voyages that could last years. Families watched loved ones cross oceans. Later generations emigrated in enormous numbers, building lives in France, Brazil, Venezuela, Bermuda, the United States, Canada and elsewhere while maintaining powerful connections to the villages, islands and cities they had left behind.

For an Atlantic country, and particularly for island communities such as the Açores and Madeira, distance became a familiar part of family life. Home could be loved intensely even while living thousands of kilometres away from it.

That experience found its way into Portuguese music, poetry, and literature. Fado gave saudade one of its most recognisable voices, expressing love and loss, absence and fate, the passing of time and the longing for what may or may not return.

Perhaps that is what makes saudade so Portuguese. Not that the feeling belongs only to Portugal, or that it cannot be understood elsewhere, but that generations of Portuguese experience have made us particularly adept at recognising it, naming it and turning it into something beautiful.

Let us share a moment of that mournful beauty with you.

Designed in Porto.
Made for your home.

Every tile in the Saudade Collection begins as an original design developed by our studio and is produced to order in Porto on glazed ceramic.

Our designs draw from Portuguese places, traditions, architecture and everyday life, interpreted through the visual language of azulejo. They are contemporary pieces inspired by a centuries-old Portuguese art form, created to bring a little of that story into homes today.
