Touch of Contemporary Collection

Tradition does not have to stand still to remain meaningful.

A Touch of Contemporary brings the familiar visual language of Portuguese azulejo into conversation with the world we live in now. Traditional cobalt borders and decorative flourishes frame the unexpected: a UFO making off with a pastel de nata, a lucky cat surrounded by coins, boba tea, moonlit mushrooms and other subjects that would have been difficult to imagine on a Portuguese tile generations ago.

There is room for both. These nine artist-designed tiles were created with a little humour, a little whimsy and a great deal of affection for the tradition that inspired them.

Designed by our studio and made to order in Porto on glazed ceramic. Available in three sizes, from €20.

Preserving Tradition

Rooted in Portugal’s tile-making heritage.

Keeping Tradition Alive

Portuguese Tile Society began with a concern familiar to many families: traditions once passed naturally from one generation to the next can quietly disappear when younger generations no longer find a connection to them.

Thankfully, the story does not end there. Across Portugal, there is renewed interest in traditional arts, crafts and cultural practices, often encouraged by artists, makers, local organisations and small independent projects finding new ways to introduce them to another generation.

We believe preservation and creativity can exist side by side. Some of our work looks closely to the past. This collection looks deliberately towards the present.

If someone first becomes curious about azulejo because a tile made them laugh, reminded them of something they love, or placed something from their own culture inside a Portuguese artistic tradition, that curiosity matters. Sometimes a whimsical connection is the beginning of a much deeper appreciation.

A Living Tradition

Portugal does something rather remarkable with its traditional arts and crafts: it gives them an official place in modern working life.

An artisan in Portugal can apply for formal recognition by the state and receive a Carta de Artesão, or Artisan Card. There is a National Register of Handicrafts and an official catalogue defining the activities Portugal recognises as artisanal professions. These are not honorary titles created for tourism. They form part of a national system established in Portuguese law to recognise and support people actively practising traditional crafts.

The recognition gets surprisingly specific. Within ceramics, Portugal distinguishes activities including azulejaria, ceramic painting and ceramic decoration. And artesanato itself is explicitly recognised within Portugal's tax law as an economic activity, just as the tax system formally classifies the work of architects, engineers, painters, musicians and other professions.

There is something important in that approach. A tradition is not preserved simply because an old example survives behind glass. It survives when someone is still learning how to make it, someone else finds a new reason to care about it, and another generation decides it is worth carrying forward.

That leaves room for preservation and experimentation, for the ancient and the new.

Portuguese artistic traditions have never stopped evolving, and contemporary work can be one more chapter in that story. We like to think there is enough room in the Portuguese azulejo tradition for history, beauty and craftsmanship...and occasionally, a UFO with very good taste in pastries.

Designed in Porto.
Made for your home.

Every tile in the Touch of Contemporary Collection begins as an original design developed by our studio and is produced to order in Porto on glazed ceramic.

Our designs draw from Portuguese places, traditions, architecture and everyday life, interpreted through the visual language of azulejo. They are contemporary pieces inspired by a centuries-old Portuguese art form, created to bring a little of that story into homes today.
