Regional Azulejo Collection

Everyone from Portugal is from somewhere smaller.

The Regional Collection is a tile for each of those somewheres. The Douro in terraces above the river. Nazaré under a wave. A doorstep in the Alentejo at the hour when nobody moves. Thirteen places, each drawn the way it is actually remembered rather than the way it is photographed.

Traditional azulejo borders frame every scene, and in every scene there is a black cat. His name is Fado Gato, and he has been to all thirteen.

The cat who has been everywhere

Fado Gato appears in all thirteen tiles, and he is doing something different in each one.

In Lisboa he sits on a step with his back to you, waiting for the tram to finish the climb. In the Alentejo he is asleep on a warm doorstep, because that is the correct response to the Alentejo in the afternoon. In Coimbra he wears the black cape of a university student. In Viana do Castelo he wears an embroidered lenço around his neck. In Nazaré he sits beside the nets and watches the wave, which is braver than most of us manage.

He is not a mascot. He is the reason the collection is a collection. Thirteen views of Portugal would be thirteen postcards. One cat walking through all thirteen makes it a journey, and it makes a wall of two or three tiles read as a story rather than a set.

Find him first. That is what everyone does.

We believe a place is best drawn by what stays with you after you leave. Not the monument on the postcard, but the light on a wall, the smell of a cherry orchard in June, a stone granary standing in a green field with nobody else around. These tiles are built from those pieces.

A small country
that is many countries

Ask someone in Portugal where they are from and they will rarely answer "Portugal". They will tell you Minho, or Beira, or Trás-os-Montes, or the island. The country is small enough to cross in a day and varied enough that crossing it feels like changing countries several times.

The green, wet north with its granite villages and its espigueiros standing on stone legs. The terraced Douro, cut into the hillsides over centuries. The high, cold Beira Interior under the snow of the Serra da Estrela. The Alentejo, flat and golden and enormous, where a single tree can hold the whole horizon. The Algarve's cliffs going gold into the sea. And out in the Atlantic, the Açores and Madeira, volcanic and green and entirely themselves.

Each region has its own food, its own accent, its own saints and festivals and way of building a house. People who have left Portugal do not miss Portugal in the abstract. They miss a particular valley, a particular kind of bread, a particular view from a particular window.

That is who this collection is for. Not the person who wants a tile of Portugal, but the person who wants the tile of their place.

The Regional Collection will keep growing. There are more corners of this country than thirteen.

Designed in Porto.
Made for your home.

Every tile in the Regional Collection begins as an original design developed by our studio and is made to order in Porto.

Our designs draw from Portuguese places, traditions, architecture and everyday life, interpreted through the visual language of azulejo. They are contemporary ceramic pieces inspired by a centuries-old Portuguese art form, created to bring a little of that story into homes today.
