Brave New View

There is a quiet kind of magic in arriving somewhere new and recognising home.

Brave New View was created for those who travel to Portugal and find themselves unexpectedly moved by it, those building a new life here, and those returning after years or generations away. These designs celebrate the happiness and peace of finding your place while making room for everything that comes with it: courage, uncertainty, discovery, unfamiliarity and the people and places you may still miss.

Traditional Portuguese elements meet contemporary and multicultural colours and imagery, reflecting the many different stories that can lead someone to Portugal.

Finding home somewhere new

Brave New View grew from our own family's experience of leaving and returning. As Portuguese from the Açores who spent several decades in North America, coming home to Portugal was both a return and a beginning.

Home was familiar, but it was also new. Portugal had evolved. Life on the mainland was different from life on the islands our family had known, and we had changed too. There were things that immediately felt as though they belonged to us and others we had to learn from the beginning.

We recognise that same mixture in many of the people now making their way to Portugal. There can be enormous happiness in choosing a new home and still difficult days when nothing feels familiar. There are bureaucracies to understand, customs to learn and friendships to build. There are people and places elsewhere that remain part of you. Even a move made with complete conviction can sometimes be incredibly isolating.

This collection honours all of it. The courage it takes to leave, the excitement of beginning again, the daily hurdles nobody puts in the photographs, the unexpected moments of belonging and the extraordinary experience of discovering that home may be somewhere you have never lived before.

Brave New View will continue to grow alongside those stories.

We believe preservation and creativity can exist side by side. Some of our work looks closely to the past. This collection looks deliberately towards the present.

If someone first becomes curious about azulejo because a tile made them laugh, reminded them of something they love, or placed something from their own culture inside a Portuguese artistic tradition, that curiosity matters. Sometimes a whimsical connection is the beginning of a much deeper appreciation.

A country that knows something about leaving

Portugal has a long history of emigration. Economic hardship, political conditions, limited opportunities and the search for a better life sent generations of Portuguese beyond our borders. They crossed the Atlantic to Brazil, Venezuela, Bermuda, the United States and Canada, but they also travelled in enormous numbers within Europe, particularly to France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany and later the United Kingdom and other European countries.

That history is not as distant as it can sometimes seem. United Nations estimates counted approximately 1.8 million Portuguese emigrants living outside Portugal in 2024, with about 1.29 million living elsewhere in Europe. Europe now accounts for roughly 72% of the Portuguese emigrant population.

And Portuguese people are still leaving. The Emigration Observatory estimates that approximately 70,000 people emigrated from Portugal in 2024. At the same time, there is another movement taking place: Portuguese people are coming home. The most recent complete return data recorded 28,286 Portuguese-born people moving back to Portugal in 2023, following more than 32,000 in 2022 and 33,000 in 2021.

Behind those numbers are generations of families who understand what it is to arrive somewhere without knowing quite how things work. To learn another language or another way of living. To miss home while building a new one. To belong to two places at once. And, sometimes, to return and discover that even home can feel new again.

Today, people from other parts of the world are making that journey in the opposite direction and recognising something in Portugal that makes them want to stay.

Our own history gives us good reason to understand both the beauty and the difficulty of that choice.

We know something about what it means to be the newcomer. Welcome.

Designed in Porto.
Made for your home.

Every tile in the Brave New View Collection begins as an original design developed by our studio and is produced to order in Porto on glazed ceramic.

Our designs draw from Portuguese places, traditions, architecture and everyday life, interpreted through the visual language of azulejo. They are contemporary pieces inspired by a centuries-old Portuguese art form, created to bring a little of that story into homes today.
