Inspired by an original historical photograph of Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, this tender portrait was created after a field study in Fátima by the Sousa family artists of Portuguese Tile Society. The three children stand before a stone wall. Lúcia and Jacinta wear dark headscarves, and Francisco holds a shepherd's staff, a ribbon rosette pinned to his jacket.
The design combines charcoal-style portraiture, soft watercolour washes and azulejo scrollwork in each corner. Rendered in timeless shades of charcoal, ivory and muted cobalt blue, it captures the innocence, solemnity and quiet strength of the three children whose lives became forever entwined with Fátima's history in 1917.
Francisco and Jacinta were declared saints in 2017. A gift for a First Communion, for a pilgrim coming home from Fátima, and for anyone who loves the story of the little shepherds.
