Our Lady of Fátima was inspired by an October afternoon at the parish church of Fátima, where the three shepherd children were baptised. The design draws on antique scapulars and richly embroidered religious textiles. Our Lady wears a jewelled crown and joins her hands in prayer, a rosary falling from them. Ivory blossoms, golden threadwork and small gold stars surround her on a deep chocolate-brown ground, the colour of traditional Carmelite scapular cloth.
The Brown Scapular is two small pieces of brown cloth joined by straps. It belongs to the habit of the Carmelite orders and is worn as a sign of devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. At Fátima on 13 October 1917, Lúcia said she saw Our Lady once more, “this time resembling Our Lady of Carmel”.
