During an October afternoon at the historic Parish Church of Fátima (Igreja Paroquial de Fátima), one of our family artists was captivated by a painting of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Christ Child and the souls in Purgatory. Crowned and robed in Carmelite brown and cream, Our Lady holds the Christ Child on a bank of golden cloud. Both hold out small scapulars, while angels reach down to lift souls from the flames below.
The church holds a special place in Fátima's history. Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta were baptised there. On 13 October 1917, Lúcia said she saw Our Lady once more, “this time resembling Our Lady of Carmel”, and in 1948 she entered the Carmel of Saint Teresa in Coimbra.
We have lovingly reinterpreted the painting in rich, traditional colours, honouring both its spiritual meaning and the centuries-old devotional traditions woven into Portugal's cultural heritage. It is the painting behind our scapular-inspired Our Lady of Fátima tile, also in the Fátima Collection, and a gift for anyone devoted to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whose feast falls on 16 July.
Artistically reinterpreted and produced in Portugal by Portuguese Tile Society. Inspired by a painting in the Igreja Paroquial de Fátima, Portugal. Original painter and date unknown.
Made to order in Porto on glazed ceramic, for indoor display. Three sizes from 20 €.
